Study Offers New Insights on Invasive Fly Threatening U.S. Fruit Crops

Raleigh, North Carolina (March 15, 2013)--Humans aren’t the only species with a sweet tooth. Research from North Carolina State University shows that the invasive spotted-wing vinegar fly (Drosophila suzukii) also prefers sweet, soft fruit – giving us new insight into a species that has spread across the United States over the past four years and threatens to cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to U.S. fruit crops.
 
“Because we know that D. suzukii prefers softer, sweeter fruit, we can focus our research efforts into which wild fruits may serve as reservoirs for this species and help identify new crops that might be at risk,” says Dr. Hannah Burrack, an assistant professor of entomology at NC State and lead author of a paper on the research. 

“These findings may also be a starting point for plant breeders interested in developing new fruit varieties that are more resistant to D. suzukii.”

Originally from east Asia, D. suzukii were first detected in California in 2008. They have since spread to states from Wisconsin to North Carolina to Florida. The female flies use serrated blades on the tip of their abdomens to cut through the skin of ripe fruit and lay their eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae that feed on the flesh of the fruit until they reach maturity – ruining the fruit in the process.

Sellers go to great pains to remove infested fruit before it reaches the marketplace, so consumers won’t notice a difference in fruit quality. But infestations can cause significant economic problems for fruit growers. For example, researchers estimate that D. suzukii has the potential to destroy 40 percent of blackberry and raspberry crops in the eastern U.S., which would affect berry prices and availability.

D. suzukii already causes tens of millions of dollars in crop damage annually to cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries. But researchers estimate that losses could climb into the hundreds of millions of dollars per year if the pest can’t be controlled.

While ongoing studies explore pesticide-based approaches to control D. suzukii, the new research from NC State should help scientists and farmers with other control options.

For example, the study found that D. suzukii are more likely to infest certain varieties of raspberries and blackberries. This means growers may be able to limit crop damage by planting more of the varieties that D. suzukii tend to avoid. Similarly, this information allows farmers to focus pesticide treatment on varieties that are most susceptible to infestation.

The three-year study evaluated D. suzukii impacts in commercial blackberry and raspberry crops in North Carolina, and also encompassed laboratory experiments to help researchers determine which characteristics made fruits more likely to be infested. The work was supported by the Southern Region Small Fruit Consortium, North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, North Carolina Department of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture and North Carolina Blueberry Council.

The paper, “Variation in selection and utilization of host crops in the field and laboratory by Drosophila suzukii Matsumara (Diptera: Drosophilidae), an invasive frugivore,” was published online March 14 in Pest Management Science. Co-authors are Dr. Gina Fernandez, a professor of horticultural science at NC State; Taylor Spivey, an undergraduate at Brevard College; and Dylan Kraus, an undergraduate at NC State.

More on Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) ... be watchful of high tunnel raspberries and strawberries

 Previous issues of this newsletter have included reports on spotted wing Drosophila (SWD) ... see http://ipm.illinois.edu/ifvn/contents.php?id=11#fruit and http://ipm.illinois.edu/ifvn/contents.php?id=13#fruit.  The map indicates the counties in which the presence of SWD has been confirmed, and in several of these cases, larval infestations of raspberries have been reported as well.  As I stated earlier, I suspect that SWD is present in most if not all Illinois counties and that counties not marked on the map below represent areas where we have not monitored enough to detect it yet.

As fall brings frost and freezes to the area, outdoor production of raspberries will end, and so will reports of outdoor infestations of fruit.  Be aware, however, that this insect has been recorded from high-tunnel raspberries and strawberries.  As production of these crops continues in high tunnels, monitoring for SWD will be essential.  Michigan State University's web site on SWD includes directions on how to construct traps to monitor for it ... see http://www.ipm.msu.edu/SWD/SWD-monitor.htm.

Issue 13 of this newsletter listed effective insecticides for SWD control in raspberries.  For strawberries, labeled insecticides that should reduce damage from this insect include Brigadier (7-day PHI; residual activity of about 7 days), Danitol (2-day PHI; residual activity of about 7 days), Entrust (1-day PHI, OMRI-approved; residual activity of about 3-5 days), Pyganic and other natural pyrethrins (0-day PHI, OMRI-approved; residual activity of about 1-2 days), Malathion (3-day PHI; residual activity of about 5 days), and Radiant (1-day PHI; residual activity of about 7 days).  (PHI = preharvest interval, the number of days that must elapse between final application and harvest; OMRI = Organic Materials Review Institute.)

Whiteflies are being found commonly in the landscape, feeding on the leaves of flowers and other herbaceous plants as well as hydrangea, other shrubs, and trees. Generally, late season whiteflies can be ignored, as they are too late to cause serious damage to plant health or even cause obvious aesthetic damage.

Boxelder bugs are common every year, but are very numerous this year. Their numbers are typically much larger in hot, dry years, so their larger numbers this year were expected.

Over the summer and especially the last few weeks, detections of spotted wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, and reports of larval damage to fruit have been increasing in Illinois and nearby states including Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Infestations have posed problems in Michigan since 2010. In Illinois, the list of counties where this is insect has been collected include Pope, Union, and Marion in the southern part of the state, Champaign, Tazewell, and Adams in the central part of the state, and Ogle County in the north. It likely is present in most if not all of the counties in Illinois.

New fruit-eating fly lands in Wisconsin

The list of non-native insects making their way to Wisconsin is growing. A recent arrival may cause significant damage to fruit crops.

There is a new bug in town. And it loves fruit. It's called the Spotted Wing Drosophila. The small fly hitched a ride to California from East Asia with a layover in Hawaii. It was found on the West coast in 2008. Since then, it's been moving east. And now it's in Wisconsin. Phil Pellitteri is an entomologist at UW- Madison. He says given its behavior in other parts of the country, the fly, which arrived here a little over a year ago, may be here to stay.

"Unfortunately in the states where it has had a year or more experience than we've had, it continues to spread territory,” Pellitteri said. “That's what the fear is. Is whether it gets reestablished each year or we have small pockets that survive the winter and start the problem over again"

The Spotted Wing Drosophila has a taste for berries of all kinds, cherries, and most other fruit commonly grown in the Midwest. Pellitteri says the fly worries farmers and gardeners because it feeds on fruit right before harvest.

"They're not a pest of earlier none-ripened fruit,” he said. “It's when things are getting to their peak is when this particular species is most aggressive."

In the long run, growers may have to rely on plant breeding to control this newest arrival. Pellitteri says changing the texture of fruit may slow the Spotted Wing Drosophila down.
