Mitigating Emerald Ash Borer Impacts on the Urban Forest: Municipal Grant Program

The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus is offering competitive, reimbursable grants to help local government agencies sustain their urban forests by reducing impacts from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB.) Recipients must pay for 50% of project costs through direct or in-kind contributions. Communities within the Illinois EAB quarantine zone eligible to apply. 

There are 3 categories of grants available:

1.     Reforestation Grants - For planting to replace ash trees;

2.     Technical Assistance Grants - For inventory and assessment of public trees and the development of plans to manage EAB; and

3.     Wood Utilization Grants - For reclamation and utilization of wood products from felled ash trees.

Applications are due February 1, 2013.

Two workshops will be offered to help applicants plan competitive EAB management and reforestation projects. Municipal and state officials will discuss EAB planning and management. Grant application information and tips will be presented.

The Illinois Native Plant Society grant program is now accepting proposals for funding.

Grants of up to $1,000 are available for projects making use of native plants.

The Central Chapter of the Illinois Native Plant Society if offering grants to support one-time projects.
Demonstration prairies, teacher and student workshops, rain gardens and butterfly gardens are among the types of projects previously funded. Habitat restoration projects, including the removal of invasive species and planting native trees, also qualify. Applications are welcome from central Illinois schools and organizations. Student and scout projects also are eligible. Applications are accepted throughout the year, although proposals should be in by March 1 for projects to be planted this spring. Grant funds come from the chapter’s annual plant sale scheduled for April 30 at the Washington Park Botanical Garden. Over the life of the grant program, more than $20,000 has been awarded to support local projects.
