During this webcast, we will take a look at some of the aquatic invasive species now found in Michigan, and some that are knocking on our door. We’ll also discuss a variety of ways to help stop the spread and protect our lakes and streams.

Ocean Invaders: Ports Most Vulnerable to Invasive Species

The world port at highest risk of invasive species is Singapore, according to a new study.

The Suez Canal and Hong Kong follow Singapore, according to the study, which reveals the 20 ports most likely to be attacked by invasive species.

The highest ranking U.S. locale is the port of New York and New Jersey, which comes in at No. 13.

Global shipping has carried exotic animals and plants such as lionfish, zebra mussels and killer algae around the world on ship's hulls or in their ballast water, which ships add and dump for balance. Recently, cargo ships started carrying automatic identification systems that track their movements, giving researchers new insight into the vessels' journeys.

Marine invaders need more than just a ride on a ship to infest a new ecosystem, however — conditions at their next port of call must be just right. So scientists combined data about ports' environmental conditions, marine biogeography and ballast water release protocols with data from nearly 3 million ship voyages. They used this combined information to estimate the invasive species risk from ballast water at different ports.
 

The new model thus accounts for the fact that bioinvasion is a multistage process, the researchers said. "Our model combines information such as shipping routes, ship sizes, temperatures and biogeography to come up with local forecasts of invasion probabilities," study author Bernd Blasius, a professor at the University of Oldenburg in Denmark, said in a statement. The results were published April 24 in the journal Ecology Letters.
The good news is that most ports are unlikely to receive invaders via ballast water. For example, ports in the North Sea (between Great Brittan and mainland Europe) fall outside of the top 20 endangered ports despite their enormous shipping traffic, the researchers said.
Some invaders from the U.S. East Coast have established a toehold in North Sea ports, but overall, the region's cold climate has made it tough for exotics to survive there, the researchers said.
The ports with the highest risk are in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the United States.

The research also revealed that for marine life hitching a ride inside ships, there is a "sweet spot" distance between the organism's home and a new habitat: 5,000 to 6,200 miles (8,000 to 10,000 kilometers).
In what could be called a Goldilocks effect, the researchers conclude that, at short distances, it's unlikely an introduced species will be non-native. At long distances, the chance to survive transport is small and there's not much shipping, resulting in low invasion risk.

In another positive result, the shipping model shows the benefits from ballast water treatment. Scientists and regulators have been trying to come up with better ways to prevent the spread of invasive species, but no one has settled on the best method. The study suggests that even moderate efforts are helpful, because the cumulative effect of treating ballast water at each port stop multiplies during a trip.

This Halloween you might be expecting a parade of monsters, ghosts, vampires and werewolves to come knocking on your door, the scarier the better! But even more frightening is the knowledge that every day alien invaders -- nonnative aquatic nuisance species to be exact -- are sneaking into our lakes, rivers, streams and even oceans and these critters aren't polite enough to knock! They may not have fangs or three heads, but aquatic invasive species like Spiny Water Flea and Silver Carp are all tricks and no treats!
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes that everyone, from school teachers to recreational boaters, can help stop the
zombie attackspread of aquatic invasive species. Our All Tricks, No Treats Halloween Campaign will share some great tips on ways to recognize the worst invaders and stop these
ghoulsunwanted species dead in their tracks. And if you're still considering your costume options for this Halloween, consider spooking your neighborhood dressed up as Rock Snot! Now that's scary!

 

Week 1: DON'T LET IT LOOSE!

 Released aquarium pets threaten native habitats! Pet owners may unintentionally create new invasive species threats when they dump fish tanks into the wild, or pets escape confinement. School programs may think it "humane" to release non-native species after class sessions are completed, but they can become destructive invaders over time. Don't be tricked into thinking release is the answer!

Aquarium Hobbyists and Water Gardeners: Join the discussion and help fight aquatic invasive species



 Protecting Illinois’ natural areas and waterbodies requires your help. Now is your chance to voice your opinion and help shape statewide education and outreach efforts to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS).

Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) and North Carolina State University (NCSU) are conducting focus groups in Glencoe (Sept 26th) and Peoria (Sept 27th) with aquarium hobbyists and water gardeners. The two-hour meetings will occur between 6 and 8 pm on these evenings. A small monetary compensation for participation will be provided.

AIS can easily be released into the environment by aquarium and water garden hobbyists.  The goals of this discussion are to learn what you think about practices to reduce the spread of AIS and to help design future campaigns that speak to the people of Illinois.

Invasive Species Spotlight: Brazilian Elodea

Native to southeastern South American, Brazilian elodea has spread from its native habitat with the aid of its usage as an aquarium plant. The problem occurs when this plant is released into natural aquatic habitats.

Brazilian elodea can be found growing in open ponds and lakes, old reclaimed quarries, slow-moving streams, and wetlands. It can be found growing at depths of up to 20 feet. Its only primary form of spread is through introductions from unwanted aquarium waste and fragmentation, where a portion of the plant becomes separated from the main plant and floats away or roots in a new area. Elodea is dioecious and all the plants found in the US are thought to be males and is not know to spread through seed production.

The plant can grow very rapidly in new areas. They quickly out-compete native plants for space. This aquatic invader can slow down or alter water flow, thereby trapping sediment and creating stagnant pools. It is also a problem for aquatic recreationists interfering with boating and fishing.

Until recently, in Illinois this invasive plant was positively identified in a few southern counties. Last summer, Brazilian elodea was found in a pod in Libertyville (Lake county). During regular pond maintenance, two populations were uncovered.

It can be identified by the leaves and stems. Its leaves grow in whorls around the stem in groups of 4 to 8. They are oblong to linear about 1 inch long and ¼ inch wide. The margins have very fine serrations that may be difficult to see. Brazilian Elodea may flower from spring and early summer with sporadic flowers up into the autumn. Each flower is held above the waters surface on a fine stalk up to ¾ of an inch in diameter and white with 3 petals. It can be confused with American Elodea (Elodea canadensis) witch can look very similar but has leaves whorled usually in groups of 3’s that are only ½ inch long.

Residents are urged to report suspected infestations and also help stop the spread of aquatic invasives with these simple precautions:

• Dispose of any excess plants in the trash.

• Do not release aquatic invasive plants into any waters.

• Rinse your aquatic garden plants before planting.

• Keep aquatic plants contained in your water garden.

• Clean all recreational vehicles, trailers, and equipment before leaving any lake or river, since the plant can "hitchhike" onto such equipment.

Brazilian Elodea found in Lake County

An invasive, difficult-to-eradicate aquarium plant has been found in a pond in Libertyville, and Lake County officials are telling residents to dispose of such plants by throwing them in the garbage and not by leaving them out in the open.

Routine pond maintenance in Libertyville uncovered two populations of the invasive species Brazilian Elodea. The plants were found in Libertyville last summer.

Tests conducted by the Lake County Health Department confirmed that Brazilian Elodea continued to thrive beneath 8 inches of ice covered by 6 inches of snow, a release from the Lake County Health Department stated.

Brazilian Elodea is considered exotic and invasive in the United States, according to the release. Until 2008, this invasive aquatic plant was only found in 17 counties in the Midwest and Ontario, with only one known population surviving the cold winters of central Minnesota.

This plant is widely sold as an aquarium and water garden plant and an “oxygenator” for water nurseries under the name “Anacharis."

The problem occurs when the plants from aquariums or water gardens are released into a neighboring water body instead of being disposed of properly (i.e., in the garbage).

Once established, Brazilian Elodea is difficult to completely eradicate. This plant can grow aggressively in lakes and streams, causing a decline in water quality, restricting water movement, interfering with navigation and traditional recreational uses, and reducing the abundance and diversity of native plants.

The Health Department urges residents to take the following precautions to stop the spread of Brazilian Elodea and other invasive plant species: • Dispose of any excess plants in the trash.

• Do not release aquatic invasive plants into any waters.

• Rinse your aquatic garden plants before planting.

• Keep aquatic plants contained in your water garden.

• Clean all recreational vehicles, trailers, and equipment before leaving any lake or river, since the plant can "hitchhike" onto such equipment.

Invasive species grow to 188 in Great Lakes

There are now 188 invasive species identified in the Great Lakes and while chances of ridding the water of established populations is considered slim, steps are being taken to control them and the public is called upon to help.

That was the message Sarah Bailey, research scientist for the Great Lakes laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Science Fisheries - Oceans Canada brought to an audience at Windsor’s main library branch Sunday.

Bailey, a University of Windsor professor with the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, said the most recent arrival is the Bloody Red Shrimp, which was first discovered in 2006.

This non-native species joins the zebra mussel, the fanwort, the rusty crayfish and the spiny water flea in an invasion that, Bailey said, could cost the Canadian economy $3 billion over the 10 next years through depleted fish stocks, environmental changes and the sheer cost of cleanup. She added that already mid-sized municipalities pay an extra $360,000 annually to clear and clean water intakes.

The good news, Bailey said, is that the federal government’s introduction of ballast regulations on foreign shipping entering the waterway in the 1990s — requiring captains to flush home-port ballast at sea and replace it with salty water from the open ocean — is improving the situation. Ships carrying the species in ballast or on their hulls have long been the prime suspect in the introduction of invasive species.

But, she added, the fact species are always being discovered may be because there is often a time lag of several years, even decades, before they are detected. At the same time, she said, when a ship’s ballast tank is pumped there usually remains a certain amount of residual ballast water that is too shallow for pumping. “In a 700-foot ship that can really add up,” she said.

The ships may exchange sea ballast for Great Lakes ballast water during their voyage up through Lake Superior. But, typically, they will load up on grain at Duluth or Thunder Bay for the return trip and so, dump much of the mixed water out again.

“This residual water, we find, poses the highest risk,” she said, adding that Transport Canada introduced more stringent regulations and stricter monitoring on ship ballast to deal with this threat in 2006.

Asked whether it makes sense to simply ban foreign vessels from the Great Lakes, Bailey said removing shipping from the transportation equation would only add to other environmental problems. A ship, she said, can carry as much cargo as 400 transport trucks with much less impact on air quality.

She also added that shutting our doors to shipping is shutting our doors to trade. “Global commerce,” she said, “we’re not going to stop it.”

People living along the Great Lakes have a role to play in limiting invasive species. Noting that a study showed up to 10,000 domestic aquariums are typically emptied into the St. Lawrence around Montreal every year, Bailey said people here have a greater impact on the problem than one might think.

Among the suggestions Bailey had for citizens was to avoid emptying aquariums in a way that could see the contents end up in the river. Also, boat owners should keep pleasure boats clean and all water pumped out before moving from one body of water to another.

Owners should also inspect boats and trailers for plants and animals that may be in mud, drain all water from bilge, motors and transom wells. Also, live bait should not be released into the waterways.

Invasive snail found in Lake Michigan

(AP) — Scientists worry that a rapidly reproducing, tiny invasive snail recently found in Lake Michigan could hurt the lake's ecosystem.

The New Zealand mud snail joins a long and growing list of nonnative species moving into the Great Lakes, threatening to disrupt the food chain and change the local environment.

Scientists checking Lake Michigan water samples earlier this summer found a population of the New Zealand mud snail, the Illinois Natural History Survey said. They grow to only a few millimeters — several dozen could sit on the surface of a dime — making them hard to spot.

The snails reproduce asexually and in large numbers, and have no natural predators in North America, Kevin Cummings, a scientist who works for the Natural History Survey, said Thursday.

That means they could quickly spread, at high enough densities to outcompete native invertebrates for food and living space, he and other scientists say.

"It's hard enough to contain a species once it makes its way into nonnative waters," Cummings said in a statement. "When each mud snail has the ability to produce large quantities of embryos without a partner, you've really got a problem."

The snail is native to New Zealand but is now found in several western states and all the Great Lakes except Lake Huron. It is carried in ships' ballast water and, once in lakes and streams, hitches a ride on boats and even the clothes worn by human waders.

"Where they've gotten into streams in the western part of the country, they've caused a lot of problems," said Rochelle Sturtevant, an ecologist with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Mich. "They're taking over space that should have other native species living in it."

The mud snail joins a long and growing list of invasive species that have made homes for themselves in the Great Lakes, in many case edging out native species and disrupting food chains and the local environment.

Zebra and quagga mussels are a threat to the region's $4 billion-a-year fishery, eating up algae that is the lowest link in the lakes' food chain.

And some invasive species make it possible for others to follow, Sturtevant said. The round goby, an aggressive fish native to Eurasia, now thrives in the Great Lakes because it eats zebra mussels.

Those are just a handful of what Sturtevant says are now at least 186 invasive species in the lakes.

Environmental groups are particularly critical of the role oceangoing ships play in introducing species like mussels to the lakes.

Ships that aren't loaded down with cargo fill their ballast tanks with water for better stability when they're on the ocean, then empty the tanks when they arrive in port. That ballast water often contains any number of species, from microscopic organisms to mussels and fish.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency introduced a plan earlier this summer that would require ships to dump ballast water at least 200 miles from shore. But the plan, called a permit, includes an exemption for loaded ships, even though their tanks often contain smaller amounts of residual water and living organisms.

Environmental groups are particularly critical of the EPA's plan.

"I could sum it up in one word: nothing. The permit doesn't change a thing," said Joel Brammeier, vice president for policy at The Alliance for the Great Lakes.

The shipping industry, including the U.S. Great Lakes Shipping Association, has said it supports the idea of treating ballast tanks to kill potentially invasive species. But industry officials say that while treatment is being researched, so far there isn't a feasible way to do it.

The shipping association did not immediately return a message Thursday from The Associated Press.

Scientists won't know for some time how well the mud snail will do in Lake Michigan, but it has been in Lake Ontario since the early 1990s and lives in high numbers there and in Lakes Superior and Erie, Sturtevant said.

Some bottom-feeding fish will likely eat the snails in Lake Michigan, but not enough of them to control the population, Sturtevant said.

"They're so tiny and they're mostly shell," she said. "Even if there were things out there eating them, I don't know that they would be a really good food source."

The snails, she and Cummings said, also may migrate into streams and rivers that feed Lake Michigan, or hitch a ride to other waterways on recreational boats.

Invasive Species Threaten Great Lakes

NPR.org, July 7, 2008 · The blue-green waters of the Great Lakes seem cleaner and clearer than ever before — but while cleaner is good, clearer isn't necessarily so.

"It's a bad thing because the water looks clean because it's becoming sterile," says Cameron Davis, president of the Alliance for the Great Lakes, at a recent visit to a beach in Evanston, Ill.

He says zebra mussels and other invasive species that have worked their way into the Great Lakes filter out the food, making the water clear. At the same time, he says, "it's really stripping the food base out of the food web, such that we're really in danger of unraveling the food chain we have in this region."

Zebra mussels first invaded the Great Lakes through the ballast water of ships from Europe about 20 years ago. Colonies accumulate on the water intake and discharge pipes of power plants, municipal water plants, irrigation systems and even on boat hulls and motors, causing frequent problems. But they wreak havoc on ecosystems because they consume huge amounts of phytoplankton, like algae, effectively starving populations of native fish and other water wildlife.

And now scientists say that another invasive mussel has arrived that might even be doing worse damage to the lakes.

The thumbnail-sized quagga mussel, also carried in ballast water, is native to the Russian area of the Black Sea and first began appearing in the Great Lakes about a decade ago. Quagga populations tripled between 2005 and 2007 to a quadrillion, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates. Quaggas now carpet the bottom of Lake Michigan and parts of the other Great Lakes. To some extent, they are even crowding out the zebra mussels.

"It's the same problem, times 10," Joel Brammeier of the Alliance for the Great Lakes, recently told the Chicago Sun-Times. As a result, commercial and sports fishermen and women are seeing fewer and thinner fish.

Another species that threatens to invade the Great Lakes is the Asian carp. The carp is working its way up the Illinois River system and edging closer to Lake Michigan. Federal officials hope to stop its migration with an electric fence-like barrier installed on a canal that connects the Chicago River to the Des Plaines River, and ultimately, links the Great Lakes to the Mississippi.

The most frightening invasive species is actually a virus known as viral hemorrhagic septicemia, or VHS. This Ebola-like virus doesn't threaten humans, but it could be a huge threat to the Great Lakes' $4 billion commercial and sport fishing industry. The infection causes fish to hemorrhage and die by the thousands — and unlike other viruses, it seems to attack all species.

"A new invasive species comes into the Great Lakes on average every six to eight months," says Davis. "Prevention is really the name of the game. Once these species get in, it's very hard to get them back out. That's why we need Congress to act to get invasive species controls in place now, and it's been very slow going."

Davis and others hope the attention given to the compact prohibiting large-scale water diversions from the Great Lakes also spurs Congress to pass legislation preventing ballast water from being dumped into the Great Lakes.

The lakes "look big, it looks like you can't hurt it," says Davis, "but in fact, these Great Lakes are incredibly delicate and fragile."
