Brown Marmorated Stink Bug in Illinois

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is a new invasive insect to Illinois and has been garnishing quite a bit of attention the past couple of days. This insect has been confirmed in Cook and Kane counties; there have been other reports that we are looking into.

A great resource describing the BMSB can be found here. This pest alert describes the appearance of the BMSB, its lifecycle and biology, as well as the potential damage it can cause.

Illinois CAPS also has a poster with key diagnostic features of the BMSB. We are currently trying to determine the current distribution of BMSB in Illinois. If you feel you have BMSB in your home/yard, we would like to know. Questions or photos can be sent to invasives@inhs.uiuc.edu. It is also important that to positively confirm an insect as BMSB, we need to see the actual specimen.
